PhD Research on Scottish Battlefields and Clan Involvement
Hello.
I hope you can help me. I am researching a PhD at the University of
Glasgow on the cultural associations and contemporary interpretation of
Scottish battles and battlefields. As a Highlander of Highland ancestry, I
am particularly keen to include the clans in my research and would like to
hear from as many clan members as possible.
I am interested in a number of areas: do you have any tales about battles
or where they were fought, or of ancestors who fought at them?; do you
have any other examples of folklore and tradition – songs, poems,
place-names?; do you have items connected to a battle that have been
passed down in the family? I am also very interested in the clan’s
history and if the clan continues to have a bard.
Have you visited battlefields where your ancestors fought? Do you think
these sites should be preserved and restored for future generations? Do
you take part in commemorative acts to mark the anniversaries of battles
important to the clan? I would also like to hear from anyone with an
understanding of clan warfare, the tactics etc.
It is important that I hear from as many clan members as possible. I can
be contacted at Glasgow University at s.watson.1@research.gla.ac.uk.
Many thanks.
